Tread Lightly Upon The Notion Of Committing A Deliberate Misdeed Because

When we commit an unsavory act, we risk more than just getting caught. We also run the overwhelming risk of forfeiting recognition for everything noteworthy, and of high esteem, weve ever done.

Who hasnt noticed just how quickly society can spin a malicious scandal around a seemingly conscientious community leader, suddenly caught in the middle of some underhanded endeavor? Amazingly, even if the misdeed occurred years before, still the scandal rages out of control.

Just as Lewinsky is to Bill Clinton, so is peanut butter to jelly. Its not enough for us to aspire to a high standard, ninety-eight percent of the time. To safeguard our reputation, we must conspicuously and diligently monitor our integrity, refusing to lower the bar even once, no matter what the seduction or apparent gain.

Of particular interest is one man, forever marked, in United States history as a crook, and yet he was the first American president to ever visit Beijing, China, cultivating the groundwork for the peace that has now been established. In fact during The Cold War, he established the initial arms control, culminating in the 1972 arms control agreement. The agreement limited the growth of nuclear arsenal, and restricted anti ballistic missile systems. But today all anybody has to say is one word and every positive, noteworthy thing that he has ever accomplished is completely annihilated Watergate!

Perhaps you are even surprised to find out that former President Nixon achieved such high and honorable contributions to the construction of peace throughout the world. So, lest history repeat itself, commit only those misdeeds that you would have your entire character judged against. And always keep in mind that public disgrace is merely the culmination of something we did when we thought and/or hoped no one was looking.

It only takes one miss judgment to gobble up a life time of hard earned respect, hurling it all into this pit of forgetfulness, robbing us of the right to be thought of as an earnest and forthright student, parent, community leader etc. So even if we cant actually see the downside, if were treading against exposure, the pitfalls are out there just waiting to trip us up, waiting for us to fall in caught.

Perhaps more than anything else, eliminating dubious shortcuts is the best way to avoid the murky, shark-infested waters, anxious to devour our hard earned reputation. And whether the sharks are visible or not, rest assured, theyre there lurking, waiting to divulge our secrets. Fair perhaps not, but wisdom knows that an individual, or even an entire society, can be forever marked by one underhanded, deceptive transgression.

And whats really interesting, is how deception has this miraculous and startling boomerang effect. Ultimately, the more certain we are that we can deceive the more we are being deceived.
